100 Day Challenge - Declutter - DAY 15 - Clean Laundry Pile Up

Items:
Sorting out clean laundry piled up on a chair.  Picked out 9 items to get rid of.  As I am a renter and my washer dryer the kitchen chair is across of it and has been been a temporary catch-all when sorting out items when removing them from the dryer.

Owed for:
Usually just an item or two until about 3 month ago as I would not be having Thanksgiving or Christmas as my place.

Why I kept it:
  • Many items just needed put away, but some items ended up there as I was on the fence about keeping or getting rid of..
Why letting go:
  • As most of the stuff on the bottom was there for 3 months i decided not to be on the fence about the stuff to get rid of.

After:
I have my dining room chair back!   From on trying to only use long enough to sort, put on hanger or fold then put away immediately.

Frontera Barbacoa Taco Skillet - Review

I purchased this product for $8.49 at Meijer as I have tried and loved many other Frontera products and even though I thought the price was a little high for a frozen bagged dinner, it was still cheaper than one meal dining out even at fast food anymore.

DESCRIPTION
As it states on the front of the package, it is slow-braised beef with 3 chile barbacoa sauce, black and fire roasted beans and vegetables and it states on the package the "heat" from the dish is "Medium".  It also indicates the beef was raised without any antibiotics.

There are two servings per container and 270 calories per serving for the prepared product, which is not bad.

FIRST IMPRESSION
When I opened the package it had a wonderful smell and I easily saw the beef bits and the beans and when cooking saw the beans and a bit of carrots, but at the end of cooking only saw beef and beans I didn't think the finished product looked anything like the front of the package.

INSTRUCTIONS
While it does allow you to get a meal on the table in 15 minutes or less, the biggest problem I had is with the preparation instructions.  I can understand getting the pan very not and then adding the oil, but adding water to oil will result in grease popping and potential for burns and with the high temperature, adding water to hot grease is recipe for starting a grease fire.  Instead, add the ingredients after the oil, THEN add the water.

After it cooks 10-13 minutes the instructions indicate to put it in a serving bowl and shred the meat with two forks.  I don't think the pieces of meat were big enough to shred; I just smashed them with the spatula when cooking and put directly in to tortilla and on top of rice and on chips.

TASTE
The product on its own did not taste as flavorful as I expected it to be and seemed a bit dry.  I agree that the "heat" is medium, but more on the mild side of medium.

I tried it on a flour tortilla, rice and tortilla chips.   I like it best on tortilla chips as the crunchy texture seems to elevate it.  The rice seemed to take the heat down a notch and the texture seemed to blend in the product.  It was ok with the flour tortilla, but would probably been better in a taco shell for the added crunchy texture.

Even so, I ended up adding salsa and fresh Cilantro on top in addition to the sour cream on the side to make it more enjoyable to eat.

WOULD I PURCHASE PRODUCT AGAIN
Probably not; instead I would purchase a Frontera Cooking Sauce for $2.49 and add it to a protein and/or vegetables, although it would take longer.

Pros:
  • Can have dinner ready in under 15 minutes
  • Cost for dinner for two about the cost less than one 1 dinner out ($4.25 each)
  • Antibiotic-free meat
  • 270 calories per serving
Cons:
  • Don't think finished product looks anything like the front of the package.
  • Instruction might work on an industrial grill, but do not recommend adding water to hot oil in the pan - will splatter grease all over, could result in burns on skin and could start a grease fire - add product first then the 1/4 cup water.
  • Instruction never indicate to turn the heat down - I turned it to medium high about 5 minutes in but still turned out dry.
  • End product needed to have other items added to it to make it taste better (salsa, sour cream, Cilantro).

Stove top directions on side of the box.  My advice is DON'T ADD WATER TO THE CANOLA OIL!  Put the ingredients in first, add the water and turn the heat down to medium high and putting lid on and stir every few minutes.  I ended up cooking mine for 10 minutes on an electric burner, but can vary by stove.

Back of package describes the dish in more detail and suggests serving over rice or warm tortillas.

Side of package with nutrition information

Seven minutes into cooking.

Finished product on a tortilla and on top of beans and tortilla chip with sour cream on the side.  Ended up adding Salsa and Cilantro.

100 Day Challenge - Declutter - DAY 14 - Xersion™ Short Sleeve Sweater Dress-Plus

Item:           Xersion™ Short Sleeve Sweater Dress-Plus - purchased on sale online at J.C. Penney in
                 December.

Picture from website:
Owned for:  - A month

Why I kept it:
    • Looked cute in the picture J.C. Penney's website; maybe it was just my mirror at home.
    • Material felt very comfortable, thought I might wear it as a nightgown
Why letting go:
    • Was more like a thin sweatshirt ype knit more than a sweater and a cheap one.
    • Color was a lighter gray than expected
    • When tried on the cross-over thing at the bottom looked like a mistake in construction.
    • Clingy in all the wrong areas.  Felt it look like kittens tied in a bag struggling to get out when I walked when looking in a full length mirror.   While bad lightly would impact color, it wouldn't really change that.

Destination:  Returned it to the store

In the past, I probably would have kept it and used it as a nightgown or around the house because of the hassle to have to go the store and wait in line (as I could not justify paying return shipping).

I am trying to pare down to things that I actually like and need and no sense starting out with a garment I really don't like just because it was comfortable.

Closet Decluttering & Organizing Inspiration Video

It was good to see the above video on Dominique Sachse Youtube channel where she cleans out not one, but two of her closets and organizes her home office.

I know my closet declutter is going to take a lot longer than 4 hours and will probably do it over a period of time, but this video has inspired me to:

  • Buy some clear storage containers to I can organize items and see what is in the containers
  • Start at to bottom and work up
  • Have boxes or bags to sort items into:
    • Keep
    • Donate or give away
    • Recycle
    • Trash
I have lived where I at for over 15 years and I have a hall closet that started as a "Holiday" closet to store seasonal decorations, ribbon and wrapping paper.   As there was plenty of space left I put towels in there, then  decided to store jewelry boxes in there and those were pushed back to make room for craft items and fabric for projects. I added used bubble mailers as they can cost $1 or more to buy new, a bubble jet printer as backup (do they even make ink for that anymore?).  They were joined by some 3 1/2 inch floppy disks with pictures stored on them and a sundry of items I can no longer even remember.

I think before I start on that, I will work on the more obvious areas in the living room as that is what people see, but it is a goal to have done before the 100 day declutter is over.

100 Day Challenge - Declutter - DAY 13 - E-Salon Hair Color Kit

Item:           E-Salon Hair color kit.

  •  Kept seeing it on Facebook and when there was an offer to try for $10.00 to try without having to sign up for an on-going commitment decided to try it.   On the surface the all in one kit that comes in the mail seemed like a great idea, but once I tried the color was all wrong in the root area as it was a very unnatural shade of lavender.  They did have a number to call, but hours are limited and didn't want to call from work (no privacy).  I emailed the company for color support but did not receive a response after 2 days.  Ended up buying a different product to correct a few days later.

Owned for:    2 1/2 Years

Why I kept it:
  • After trying the product with bad results, shoved box under sink in bathroom as had requested a refund and forgot it was there.
Why letting go:
  • Thought about putting in for refund under 100% money back guarantee, don't think I ever got around to it.
  • Was not a success the first time what was left was disastrous produce for root area.
  • Don't need memories of the lavender root disaster around to haunt me.
  • I was somewhere between too old and not being old enough to pull off a shade like that.  I think when the time comes, I will be more like to be joining the blue-haired gang of old ladies than the lavender one.

Destination:
Discarded chemicals in trash, kept gloves and the conditioner and stain remover, put box and plastic insert in recycling.

100 Day Challenge - Declutter - DAY 12 - Artificial Flowers in Plastic Vase

Item:           Artificial Flowers in Plastic Vase.

Owed for:    19+ Years

Why I kept it:
  • As with many things I have kept if not for sentimental reasons, I thought their might be a craft application.
Why letting go:
  • It looks like a Bingo prize at a nursing home
  • Was a present from a guy I was dating at the time when in the hospital after an accident.  It is cheap and artificial, just like turned out to be.
  • It was probably a Nursing home Bingo prize; he was living his his elderly parents at the time and he was coming to see me in the hospital, saw them and said "Hey Ma, can I take this to my girl I am seeing?  She is in the hospital?".  Although it was probably something her good friend Maisey or Gertrude got a Bingo and gave to her, she said "Sure, son" hoping we would work out and he would move out.
  • As I have not used it in craft project in nearly 20 years, I probably never will now.

Destination:    Local thrift store.  May it go on to brighten another Bingo table.

100 Day Challenge - Declutter - DAY 11- 4 Vintage 1950's Dinner Plates Franco Fiorgi by Quadrifoglio Made in Italy

Item:           4 Vintage 1950's Dinner Plates Franco Fiorgi by Quadrifoglio Made in Italy

Owed for:    10+ Year (picked up at an estate sale)

Why I kept it:
  • I like how they look and think any food looks great on them
  • .Big, thick and sturdy
Why letting go:
  • Big, thick and take about half of the dish rack I have in a cabinet
  • Too rare and nice for everyday use
  • Don't have the full set; just four plates.

Destination:    Giving to my ex to use for small get-togethers as he doesn't have any matching plates.

One plastic plate he had I am certain was stained from oil-laden car or motorcycle parts left on it
for a  long period of time.by either he or my son, but once it went through the dishwasher it was
put back into dinner plate circulation.

100 Day Challenge - Declutter - DAY 10 -Takeout Plastic Tableware & 2015 Carmike Cinemas Popcorn Bucket

Item:                      Takeout Plastic Tableware & 2015 Carmike Cinemas Popcorn Bucket

Owed for:               1-3 years

Why I kept it:
  • When we would get takeout and take it home (mostly from Fazoli's), I would save the plasticware fork/knife/napkin figuring could use it for a picnic until it over took an entire drawer.  Obviously, was getting takeout more than picnicking.
  • .Kept Carmike Cinemas Popcorn bucket for sentimental reasons and figured I could use it for something.
Why letting go:
  • All are taking up too much space and they are not needed.  Going forward can write a post about the movies we see to remember the good times instead of physical object.

Destination:
Took to Celebration of Life for a relative over the weekend and plan on taking into work to as we                      have "food" days frequently/

100 Day Challenge - Declutter - Day Nine - 4 Towels

Items:           4 Towels

Owed for:    4-10 years

Why I kept it:

  • It seemed like there was a black hole under my son's bed captured towels and socks in its vortex and would have to grab old ones out of the closet just to dry off.
Why letting go:
  • Two of the towels are getting a little raggedy on the eges and the other two are discolored after accidently washed with an article of clothing I had dyed a wine color and despite being bleached.
  • The towel shortage stopped when my son moved out and I have more than I need.

Destination:    Local ASPCA Animal Shelter

100 Day Challenge - Declutter - Day Eight - Son's Favorite Fire Truck Small Blanket

Item:                   Son's Favorite Fire Truck Baby Blanket

Owed for:           22+ Years

Why I kept it:
  • It was my son's favorite blanket from the time he around 2 years old to 5 years old. He spotted it when he was 2  at a thrift store and wanted it as it had dogs on a fire truck on it.  He used to carry it around with him everywhere .until we used it to try to put out an engine fire my Taurus (ended up putting out by pouring Diet Coke on it).. It is bigger than most baby blankets but not as big a a full size so it was easy for him to carry around, but still cuddly to cover up with for a nap without being too small.
Why letting go:
  • My son is 24; he has long forgotten this blanket.
  • It is in really rough shape. The center area had a slight burn that I cut away, but he didn't want fixed.   I tried to reinforce it with Heat N Bond, some fabric scraps and zig zagged and darned the heck out of it for donation - what it looked like before is below.
  • Batting and backing are still in good shape.

Destination:    Local ASPCA Animal Shelter.

Although the decluttering is slow going right now, I am trying to get rid of things I have held onto for a long time to make it easier to get rid of things I don't have as much of an attachment before starting on any specific area.

Organizational Hacks For The Kitchen

As part of the 100 Day Declutter, I have also been looking for tips and tricks to store and organize things so I will be able to find what I have easily.

Although some of these, like building a small rolling rack because of skill set or tools, or peg board might no work if you don't have space or are a renter, some of the other are more simple and inexpensive, like the using magazine racks or Command-type removable hooks are something anyone could do..

As I also try to be thrifty, I wanted to share that 3M, the maker of Command hooks usually had printable discount coupons on their website (be sure where you shop will accept internet printed coupons - I have had numerous problems at Walmart but no trouble at Meijer's with these).

Your local Dollar Tree may have 1 small 2lb hook or a 2pk of small plastic hooks for $1.

The magazine racks on the other hand are not as inexpensive.  The best source I have found so far is Target if I want to buy new ones nad have everything match.   A basic black plastic holder is currently $4.99 or a Steel White Mesh Magazine holder is $6.49.  Thrift stores and garage sales might be another source and then spray paint them the same color to match

100 Day Challenge - Declutter - Day Seven - 2 Issues of National Geographic

Items:           2 Issues of National Geographic - August 2016 & March 2017

Owed for:    Over 1 year and nearly a year

Why I kept it:
  •  I had subscribed to National Geographic as they always have interesting articles and beautiful pics
  • If you can stand to tear them up, the pages with pictures are great to wrap small presents in for Christmas.
Why letting go:
  •  Never got around to reading either issue, not because not interesting, usually just read things online  in the evenings instead.
  •  As they do have a lot of informative information, it has been hard to tear out pages to wrap presents as I think someone might enjoy them.

Destination:    Gave to a Marv (ex- husband) to read; he takes magazines and books he has read to a Little Free
                       Library.

I used to subscribe to many magazines when I worked 3rd shift in a call center as could flip through during down times and drop what I was doing as soon as phone call came in headset.

As part of my declutter going forward, I have cancelled renewals and will not subscribe to any new magazines this year to see which ones I really miss after a year and hopefully Publisher's Clearinghouse, MAD Magazine, Mercury Magazines and Blue Dolphin can stay will still be in business.

In the meantime, I am trying to find my Library card so I can check out magazines from the library if I do get rid of them all and need something to read.

100 Day Challenge - Declutter - Day Six - 5 Video Tapes and a DVD of Cartoons

Items:           5 Video Tapes and a DVD of Cartoons.

Owed for:    10+ Years

Why I kept these
  • The DVD "Liberty Kids" was given to my son a present from a friend.
  • Never finished watching 1990 movie "Cadence" with Charlie Sheen. I watched a few minutes several times and I just couldn't get into the movie.  It had good ratings and many people praised it and from what I was told,I didn't view far enough into the film to get to the good part, so I kept it.
  • 2002's "Bloodwork" with Clint Eastwood - my Mom was a Clint Eastwood fan, although this movie came out after she passed away, still made me think of her.
  • 1990's "The Adventures of Ford Fairlane" was a thrift store purchase because my son asked if he could get a movie about a car.  I didn't realize until after purchasing it starred the obnoxious Andrew Dice Clay, who was best known for telling foul mouthed, limericks and jokes that degraded women, then when blasted for it went on a talk show and cried saying it was just a character he created, not how he really felt.
  • 2001 "Swordfish" had a great cast of John Travolta, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Don Cheadle and Sam Shepard.
  • VHS tape of 1988 movie "Perfect Murder" starring Michael Douglas and Gwyneth Paltrow.  A nearby neighbor's husband like to tape shows before he passed away and we didn't have cable at the time so she gave us a box of shows he had taped.
Why letting go:
  • Part of my declutter is to get rid of at least as many items as I buy (except for food and I have an Ulta haul that came in the mail.
  • My son has long since stopped watching cartoons.
  • If I  haven't watched "Cadence" by now, I am probably never going to.
  • Can usually find a Clint Eastwood movie on Netflix or Hulu or could find one to rent at Family Video.
  • The "Ford Fairlane" movie was hidden at the back of the bookshelf hoping my son would forget about it and as I don't recall seeing him watch it, I am pretty sure he has by now.  If he asks about it I will tell him I saw a lunch on TV that Andrew Dice Clay was on a reality show with a wife that is young enough to be his daughter and it is probably the jist of that movie.
  • While "Swordfish" had a great cast, I am not really a big fan of "heist" type films.
  • I finally had gotten around to watching "Perfect Murder" and no need to keep the tape now.

Destination:    Thrift store, although I am not sure they can sell the taped VHS one - if I come across more like
that, will probably put out as free on social media.

Old VHS tapes also make good building blocks to make a town and garage for Hot Wheels.

100 Day Challenge - Declutter - Day Five - Vogue Magazine - March 2014

Item:                 Vogue Magazine - March 2014

Owed for:          3 years

Why I kept it:
  • The issue was chocked full of thing that were popular in early 2014 and I had planned on putting it in a "time capsule" for the year my son turned 21 to give to him on his 31st Birthday so he could reminisce.
Why letting go:
  • I'm the sentimental one in our family, not my son.  He's not going to want a a time capsule for his 31st birthday; he is probably going to want a power tool and a six pack of Coronas.

Destination:    A Little Free Library

This magazine joined Day Two Declutter book "Santa Paws" at the the Little Free Library across from St. Joseph Hospital that is outside a church.  On the left are kids books and adult books are on the right.

100 Day Challenge - Declutter - Day Four - '80's 7UP Reversible Basketball Plushie Promotional Toy

Item:            '80's 7UP Reversible Basketball Plushie Promotional Toy

Owned for:    Over 15 Years

Why I kept it:
  • One of the few toys that survived son's mass purge Christmas Even 2 years ago.
  • How often do you see a fuzzy, orange plushie basketball that turns into a Red Dot with Sunglasses and white hands and feet?
  • Sturdy zipper with a large pull on both sides to close up on the back, although it spent most of its time my son owned it being tossed around on the fuzzy basketball side.
Why letting go (I washed it first):
  • I am not a 7UP fan; I prefer ginger ale, so not going to use is in my vehicle.
  • Has just been collecting dust in my son's old room.

Destination:    Donation at local thrift store hoping a 7Up or 80's nostalgia fan will find it and                         love it.

Looks like an alien fuzzy orange creature giving a breech birth to the 7UP dot

Here it is on the front after turned inside out on the 7UP "Dot" side.

Here is the back of the 7UP "Dot" zipped up and the orange fuzzy basketball is on the inside.

100 Day Challenge - Declutter - Day Three - VHS of "Criminal Law"

Item:           VHS of 1988 HBO Original Movie "Criminal Law" starring Gary Oldman and Kevin Bacon

Owed for:    Over 10 Years

Why I kept it:
  • Although played to death on HBO in the late 80's, is a rare find now
  • Movie shows how versatile actors both Oldman and Bacon in their roles. Up to this movie had seen Oldman play the bad guy and Bacon play the good guy, but it is reversed in this movie.
Why letting go:
  • Have watched it several times over the years and it is a good movie, but I have seen it enough.
  • The "Baconthon" idea of watching all Kevin Bacon movies and all eating bacon themed foods and playing Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon for a family or friend gathering for a day sounded better in my head then when I tried to plan it out.
  • There are enough other Kevin Bacon movies at the video store or on Netflix or Hulu could resurrect that idea if anyone was interested.

Destination:    In a box to go to the local thrift store for donation

100 Day Challenge - Declutter - Day One - VHS of "Deceived"

Item:           VHS of 1991"Deceived", starring Goldie Hawn and John Heard

Owed for:    Over 10 Years

Why I kept it:
  • Is a rare find.  Stars Goldie Hawn in a serious role with no comedy when she was trying to break out of being labeled just a "comedy" actress.
  • Loved her hairstyle in the movie (screenshots below)
Why letting go:
  • Watched it twice all the years I have owned it.
  • As you can tell from the title, not an upbeat movie although a decent flick.

Destination:    In a box to go to the local thrift store for donation

New Year's Resolution - 100 Day Challenge - Declutter

I have been reading about 100 Day Challenges online and was inspired by the article on Refinery29
10 Things You Should Throw Away Before 2018 to make mine decluttering my home.

The article by many useful tips not just for throwing something into the trash, but recycling or passing it on to someone who place that will need or want it.

As Marv got out of the hospital today I am not going to have time to start it today and as life may get in the way, may not be able to devote time to it or post about it every day but as the challenge is for 100 days.

To begin going to use some of the boxes from Christmas for:

  • Books and magazines for donations to Little Free Libraries
  • Donation (thrift stores and will have to check into donations for shelters and Animal shelters)
  • Giveaway - either to a friend or through Social Media
Other items will be:
  • Recycling - Our community has bins we can put paper, cardboard, plastics and glass for recycling that is picked up every 2 weeks.

Last resort:

  • Actual trash

Do you have any New Year's Resolutions or are starting any 100 Day Challenges?  If so, please feel free to post about it on the comments or leave a link and I will check it out.

Happy New Year!
